New Solar-Powered Sensor

Science continues to surprise and one of the recent discoveries can literally change the world as we know it. This small solar sensor can cover at first glance, fit and hardly a penny to date. Solar-powered I-Slate tablet PC to come with touchscreen, Wi-Fi

Meant to replace chalkboards that are still in use in some parts of the world, a tablet PC called I-Slate was created by researchers using the probabilistic CMOS technology designed by a certain Dr. Krishna Palem and his team at Rice University. It was formally announced during the IEEE’s 125th Anniversary event, and is supposedly solar-powered, WiFi-enabled and has support for stylus input like the newest Sony VGP-BPS9A/B.

One day, the makers hope to see their chip embedded in all sorts of devices besides the I-Slate tablet like cellphones and TVs. But for now the use of their technology as PA3450U-1BRS  will be limited to their creation, prototypes of which are scheduled to get distributed in India this spring .

What it is: The “I-Slate,” a solar-powered, stylus-controlled classroom aid unveiled at the IEEE’s 125th Anniversary event on Tuesday. The idea is that this Sony VGP-BPS9/B Sony VGP-BPS9/S LED slate will replace the chalk slates still used in much of the world, allowing students to learn basic math skills without the need for a literate teacher (something that is in demand in much of the world). The device is being created by Dr. Krishna Palem and his team at Rice University.

How It Works: The secret is the use of a so-called “probabilistic” computer chip. The chip, which was created by Dr. Palem and his team, makes small trade offs in performance in order to reap immense energy savings. The slate will be able to download coursework using Sony VGP-BPS8 wireless networks. And because these chips should be far cheaper to produce than the high-powered processors found in most new products, making them practical for the third world.

The Potential: Dr. Palem foresees his probabilistic chips finding their way into other gadgets, such as cell phones Sony VGP-BPS2C  Sony VGP-BPS2A (which, he says, could go weeks between charges) and televisions (allowing them to consume far less power without any noticeable loss in picture quality). Eschewing earth, wind and fire, an intrepid sailor plans to circumnavigate the world in a 60 foot solar-powered boat.

Backed by the Peoples Projects Foundation, Anthony Howarth is building the Solar Circumnavigator to raise awareness about environmental issues and give the world a “solar power wake-up call.” According to Howarth, the boat will have “no internal combustion engines, no sails, no wind generators and no fuels of any kind onboard,” a restriction that includes cooking fuel. Howarth told Wired.com the Circumnavigator would feature cells with 30 percent efficiency that self-orient towards the sun — allowing for output 50% greater than a fixed solar array. The cells will power a DC motor driving six fixed-speed propellers that will be activated in pairs as needed. More power? More propellers. According to Howarth, the multi-propeller setup is more efficient than variable-speed propulsion.

The boat will be made from lightweight, renewable plywood that Howarth says is “as light and effective a boat building material as fashionable non-renewable composites.” The wood-is-better philosophy follows the lead of the Global GreenCat — a prototype boat (pictured above) created by Howarth in 1995 but abandoned due to what he called “a general lack of concern about environmental issues and resultant lack of support.”

He wouldn’t show us any photos or renderings of the Solar Circumnavigator because he worries someone would steal his design.

When the boat arrives at a port of call, Howarth plans to use an existing solar dinghy to reach shore and one of two existing solar runabouts to travel on land. They’re proof-of-concept vehicles and all part of an attempt at evangelizing solar power. Of course Howarth plans to film the entire expedition, and we promise to provide you with updates along the way.
